Children and young people's social care has 3 core service areas each managed by a principal manager. All our social work teams comprise of senior practitioners, social workers and social care support workers. Excellent partnership working is a feature of all our services either through multi-disciplinary teams, or well established professional relationships with partner agencies and other areas of children’s services. Most of the teams are based at our main office at 14a Commercial Road, Poole, BH14 0JW.
The Poole Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH)
The Poole MASH team is based in Poole police station working alongside colleagues from health and the police. It ensures that children, young people and families are signposted or referred quickly to the right service to meet their needs. It provides a prompt and effective response to child protection concerns and takes a key role in supporting practitioners to better understand where initial enquiries and requests for service should be directed. It has a specialist role in identifying CSE and missing children.
The Assessment and Action Team
The Assessment and Action Team assesses all cases screened as requiring statutory Children Act 1989 S.17 and S47 responses as children in need using the single assessment. The team also provides short term interventions where appropriate to ensure that the “window of opportunity” for change with families is not missed. The team has cases allocated once they have been triaged by the MASH.
Families First Teams
There are two Families First Teams based at the Ted Webster Centre, Ashley Road. The teams offer a statutory social work service to help and support work with vulnerable children, young people and families who are experiencing difficulties that are complex or serious in nature at Level 4 Children in Need, but fall below CP thresholds. The team includes specialist workers in Adult Mental Health, Substance Misuse, Family Therapy and Health. Specialist services for Young Carers are also based here. Caseworkers take on the role of Lead Professional both managing the multi- agency network of intervention and support and delivering skilled, intensive and persistent interventions.
Safeguarding and Permanence Teams (1 & 2)
There are two Safeguarding and Permanence teams who provide a social work service for all children subject to Child Protection Plans and all children where assessment for permanence is required, including cases subject to the Public Law Outline and Court Proceedings. A specialist Domestic Abuse Social Worker and sessional work service also support the work of these teams.
Children in Care Team
The Children in Care team provides a social work service for all of Poole’s children in care of the local authority up to 15 years of age, with the exception of children with disabilities, who are served by the CHAD (Child Health and Disability team) in the Children, Young People and Learning service unit. The majority of children in care in Poole are placed with local in-house foster carers. The team has specialist Health, Education, CAMHS and Psychologist support.
The Pathways team provides a service for children in care aged 15 - 21 years, and a leaving care service for 16-25 year olds. They also have a specialist worker for Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children.
Fostering and Placements Team
The fostering team recruits, assesses and trains foster carers for Poole’s children in care. Once approved by Poole’s Fostering Panel foster carers are provided with ongoing support supervision and training to ensure that they are able to provide the highest standards of care. The team also includes a well established supported lodgings service. The Fostering team work with other SW teams to ensure the best possible placement ‘match’ for children in care and to identify good quality, suitable residential placements for the small number of young people who require residential care. The team also undertake private fostering assessments.
The adoption team has now moved to a local regional agency: ASPIRE Adoption, who continue to work closely with relevant teams here in Poole to provide a full range of adoption services for children and all those affected by adoption, as well as Special Guardianship.
