How we know what to do

We collate and analyse information from various sources so we know what corporate equality objectives to prioritise.

Research and consultation

Research and consultation tells us about the make up of our community, people’s experiences of our services and Poole more generally. Our ‘Understanding Equality’ digests summarise what we know about the needs of specific groups of people. Where possible we also analyse research and consultations, including our Shaping Poole Survey, the Poole Opinion Panel and satisfaction surveys, by specific groups of people, for example, age, disability or sex. We also use local or national research on specific groups to inform what we do. We include this type of information in key strategic needs assessments like one for health and community safety.  

Bournemouth and Poole diversity forum

We work with the Bournemouth and Poole Diversity Forum, that meets three times a year, to discuss issues and influence what statutory agencies do around equality and diversity. 

Workforce data and issues 

Workforce data and issues tells us about the make up and experiences of our workforce. Regular reports are taken to our Management Team. These reports include data on the make up of our workforce including recruitment, grievances, disciplinaries, training take up and Equal Pay. 

Equality impact assessments 

Equality Impact Assessments help the us consider how their main new or changing policies or services meet people’s specific needs.  Services complete and review EQIAs on an ongoing basis.  Equality objectives and actions from these are taken forward through service unit and team plans.

Feedback 

Feedback helps us learn from compliments, comments and complaints we receive from people.  When someone says that they have been unfairly discriminated against or we identify this we record it. We also survey those who complained to find out how they feel we dealt with their complaint and report the findings to Management Team and Heads of service.  We look at whether specific groups feel less satisfied with the process than others.   

Community groups

Engagement with community groups – encourages participation in our decision-making processes.  We engage with a range of local groups to inform our work and ask for their views on issues that are important to them :

We encourage groups to promote themselves and share their resources through websites such as the Family Information Directory. We commission Healthwatch, which gives patients and the public a voice in influencing local health and social care services. With Dorset County Council and Bournemouth Borough Council, we commission and monitor their performance, including whether they are reaching diverse communities. 

Prejudice incidents

Prejudice incidents are reports of any incidents in the community that unfairly discriminates against someone because of their age, belief, disability, gender, gender identity, race, religion or sexual orientation.  We report numbers of incidents, hotspots, trends, action taken and outcomes annually to our Equality Leadership Group and Management Team, and to the Prejudice Free Dorset Group every 6 months.
