Cycling

There are approximately 99km of cycle routes in Poole and about half are either leisure routes, in green areas or separate from traffic. The Poole sections of National Cycle Network Route 2 and National Cycle Network Route 25 are complete and fully signed. You can cycle on the promenade in Poole, but there are restrictions during July and August.

We offer cycle training for young people. Cycle training takes place in schools in Poole for children in reception and above. Our Pedal Again in Poole courses are for adults who want to learn to ride a bike or regain their confidence. For full details of courses visit the cycle training page.

We provide maps of local cycle routes (including a conurbation map for Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch) and advice on other aspects of cycling, such as local cycling clubs, cycle friendly accommodation, cycle hire and cycle parking in Poole.

Healthy cycle rides

Healthy Cycle Rides will be taking place every Tuesday in Poole, with the first one on 28 March 2017, and the last on 24 October 2017. The rides usually start from outside Civic Centre main reception at 10.15am, and last for about 1 to 1½ hours. Bikes are available to borrow but they need to be booked in advance, as numbers are limited. If you are planning to join the Healthy Cycle ride please email cycling@poole.gov.uk or call 01202 262000. You will need to print and complete the health questionnaire and bring it with you to give to the ride leader.

On the first Tuesday of the month the ride will start at Upton Country Park. If you wish to go on this ride please meet at the bus stop in the Upton Country Park main car park. Unfortunately it is not possible to borrow bikes for this ride.

On Tuesday 2 October the Upton House ride will be run in conjunction with Dorset Wildlife Trust and will involve the Holes Bay cycle path. This is part of the new Holes Bay Nature Park, a wonderful result of The Great Heath Partnership.

The Healthy Cycle Rides are aimed at people who want to improve their fitness and confidence cycling. The routes have been chosen to be easy for most people to cycle in 1 to 1½ hours and are mostly on flat, quiet roads and traffic free routes. They are led by experienced ride leaders. There is an opportunity for participants to socialise with the other group members during a café stop at the end of the ride.

The Poole Leisure Cycling Group meets on the first Saturday of the month during British Summer Time. Rides start from the Upton Country Park Tea Rooms courtyard (BH17 7BJ) at 2pm. The group ride around the bay with a refreshment stop at Hamworthy Park. There is a ride leader and back marker so nobody gets left behind. Everyone is welcome and there is no need to book.

Breeze bike rides for women

Breeze rides are about bringing out the fun, friendly elements of cycling, and regularly involve a break for coffee and cake along the way. Whether you prefer a gentle pootle along the seafront, or a tough ride out into the forest, you are guaranteed to find something to suit you. Best of all, they are totally free to join!
