Local Plan Review

The council is undertaking a review of its Core Strategy and other Local Plan documents to look at all current planning policies to consider whether they remain in line with government policy and where necessary, amend them to take account of new evidence of need and issues of local and strategic importance that have emerged over the past decade. The Local Plan review, once completed, will set out an updated plan for Poole to meet needs and guide development to 2033.

The council started the review in 2013 and have held a number of previous consultations to date, looking at the issues and options around how the town’s development needs could be met within a new Local Plan for Poole.

Next steps

Following the further issues and options consultation in 2016, we have considered the responses and prepared a draft plan to take through the Council's committee process. Due to the general election, the Council will now be considering the publication draft of the Poole Local Plan at PLACE Overview and Scrutiny on the 21st June and Council on 18th July.

The plan will then be published for comment by the public from July-September. Following this public participation, the Council will consider if further changes need to be made to the plan before submitting the plan and associated representations to an independent inspector. The Inspector will hold a public examination towards the end of 2017/early 2018. The Council expects the examination to be resolved by Spring 2018, allowing the Council to adopt the Local Plan. Upon adoption, the Poole Plan will replace all of the current statutory local planning documents.

The timetable is as follows:

  • pre-submission publication of draft plan: July-September 2017

  • submission to Secretary of State: Autumn 2017

  • examination in public: Autumn/Winter 2017

  • adoption: Spring 2018.
