Shopping Centre car park to benefit from further major improvements

The second phase of extensive repairs to the Dolphin Shopping Centre's multi storey car park starts on Monday 22 May 2017.

The works will involve essential concrete repairs to the ceilings, columns and floors and applying special anti-carbonation paint over the concrete surfaces to further protect the structure from deterioration. In addition a new low-energy lighting system will be installed, the exterior of the car park will be painted and the signage and line markings will be refreshed.

Costing approximately £900,000, the work is expected to take around four months to complete. During this time no more than two car parking levels will be closed at any one time. To ensure customer safety while the works are carried out pedestrian and vehicle routes will be clearly marked and car park users are urged to follow the temporary signage and instructions from site personnel.

Access to the shops will be maintained throughout the works and the Dolphin Shopping Centre will continue to be open for business. The Shopmobility service will also continue as normal.

These essential maintenance works follow on from a previous phase of works, costing £1.1 million, which saw the refurbishment of the top deck of the customer car park last year.

During phase two of the works, the recently refurbished roof top car parks Shoppers One and Two and remainder of the Dolphin multi storey car park will remain open for use. The works are to be undertaken by Concrete Repairs Limited.

John Rice, Engineering Manager, Borough of Poole, said: “This latest phase of extensive repair work is part of a co-ordinated programme to deal with a backlog of maintenance of Poole’s town centre car parks. Starting in 2014 we have now completed the refurbishment of both Shoppers 1 and 2 roof car parks and we are now continuing with the major improvements to the Dolphin Shopping Centre’s multi storey car park to bring it to a standard expected by our customers.

“We are keen to refurbish our car parks and this work is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to maintaining Poole Town Centre’s infrastructure to not only support retailers but the economic prosperity of the town. One of our key priorities is ensuring the continued regeneration of Poole. This work forms part of the significant regeneration investment planned in the town centre which will not only benefit our residents but will also help to attract visitors to the area.”

John Grinnell, centre manager of the Dolphin Shopping Centre, added: “The centre is a prominent part of Poole and we’re pleased that the car park will receive a refurbishment which will ensure it is suitable for customers to use for many years to come.

“Of course our priority is to ensure there is minimal disruption to shoppers and retailers. We will continue to work closely with the council to ensure the process is completed as efficiently as possible.”
