Resurfacing works to Alder Road underway

A £110,000 project to resurface a major road in Poole is underway.

Borough of Poole is carrying out two resurfacing schemes in Alder Road. The works started yesterday and are due to be completed on Friday 17 February.

The initial phase (two days) will see works to replace the worn out road surface carried out on the section of carriageway from Wallisdown Road roundabout to the northern junction of Langside Avenue. This work has been coordinated with the ongoing traffic signal refurbishment.

During these two days a lane closure will be in force 24 hours a day meaning only northbound traffic (coming from the Sainsbury’s roundabout) will be permitted in this part of Alder Road. Southbound traffic will be diverted along Wallisdown Road towards the Mountbatten roundabout and Ringwood Road. Vehicle access from Mossley Avenue into Alder Road and also the northern junction of Langside Avenue will be limited whilst the work is in progress, hence, road users are advised to seek an alternative route. All local businesses and healthcare facilities will be open as usual.

For the second phase (three days from Wednesday 15 to Friday 17 February) works will move down the road to resurface a section of carriageway between Pine Avenue and Morrison Avenue (adjacent to the parade of shops near Winston Avenue). This work will carried out using stop/go traffic management and traffic will be able to travel in both directions although delays are likely. The junction of Morrison Avenue and Alder Road will be temporarily closed at this time for safety reasons. This section of carriageway is in poor condition due to heavy traffic and repeated flooding during the past few years. Limited parking for the businesses immediately adjacent to the site will be accessible.

Operating hours for this second phase of work will be restricted from 9.30am to 4pm to avoid the busiest periods. Mobile variable message signs (VMS) will be used throughout the works to keep road users up to date.

Cllr Drew Mellor, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: “Works have been well-planned to take place during the half term break whilst traffic levels are lower. We would like to thank drivers in advance for their patience while these improvement works are carried out.

"These works form part of a wider resurfacing programme which will also see improvements to Ringwood Road, Longfleet Road and Parkstone Road.”
