Volunteer in parks and open spaces

Anyone can volunteer; it can be rewarding and is a great way to:

  • meet new people
  • gain new or use existing skills
  • get work experience
  • protect our beautiful places and wildlife
  • make a big difference to your community.

We can offer you volunteering opportunities in:

  • countryside management
  • gardening
  • environmental education.

Sign up to volunteer in Poole, or view current volunteering opportunities.

If you are under 18 you can only volunteer with us if referred by Children's and Young People's Social Care.

Friends of parks and gardens

Friends groups are community run groups who help with everything from practical work to fundraising.

If you would like to offer some help to your favourite park or natural habitat, contact your local friends group.

Gardening volunteers

Upton Country Parks volunteer group meet to help maintain the grounds around Upton House.

Staff provide instructions and tools to volunteers, and are happy to help newcomers.

Heathwatch volunteers

Poole Heathlands Facebook page has more information on our heaths, volunteering, and the cattle that graze our sites.

Take a look at the current heathland practical tasks.

We have a local network of Heathwatch volunteers who help us work on heaths, and keep an eye on them when they are nearby.

We can also organise team building days for your group or business.

Contact us to get involved.

Wildlife sightings and surveys

Access Dorset Environmental Records Centre to record your sightings of different species of wildlife you have seen around Dorset.

Living Record allows you to record your wildlife sightings and send them to organisations working in conservation.

The data you collect can influence the conservation of species at a local or even national level.

These contribute to wider surveys such as those run by the British Trust for Ornithology or the Butterfly Conservation.

Street Watchers

We are looking for volunteers to take part in our Street Watchers scheme.

We launched Street Watchers in 2008. The scheme encourages people in Poole to take part in community events, litter picks, and reporting environmental issues.

If you would like to find out more about this scheme please contact Liz Williams on 01202 261700.

Environmental education

We offer family wildlife events and school visits at Upton Country Park. These are popular, and we're looking for the right person to join in!

You would be helping run educational activities for primary school children, youth groups and families.

Some things you might be doing include:

  • guiding people around parks and open spaces
  • running activities such as minibeast hunting, pond dipping and environmental games
  • speaking to groups about local parks, and their flora and fauna
  • running craft activities
  • helping create learning resources.

Contact Upton Country Park for more information.

Volunteer in your local community

There are lots of charities and sporting organisations that are looking for volunteers to help them so why not consider getting involved?

Your local Volunteer Centre or the South West Forum have more local volunteering opportunities.

You can also use the Do-it database to search for current opportunities.
