We can provide books and other items to people who are unable to visit the library themselves, and to people who live in sheltered housing and care homes.

If you live in your own home

If you cannot get to a library because of age or disability or because you are caring for someone, volunteers from the Royal Voluntary Service can bring books and information to you at home at regular intervals.

We have a good selection of fiction, information books on popular subjects and resources for people with dementia and their carers. Large print and audio books are available and we can provide information on all sorts of subjects – just ask your volunteer.

This is a free service and you can request any books or information free of charge too.

If you would like this service, please contact the Royal Voluntary Service Home Library Manager, email dorsetwiltshirehub@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or telephone 01305 236666, or ask any member of library staff. You can also download our leaflet from the right hand side of this page.

If you live in sheltered housing or a care home

If you live in sheltered housing or a care home we can bring books and information to you regularly.

We can arrange to leave a collection of books in a communal area for all residents to use. We have a good selection of fiction as well as information books on popular subjects, and resources for people with dementia and their carers. Large print and audio books are available and we can provide information on all sorts of subjects. Your collection will be changed every 4 weeks.

Interested? Contact the Reading and Access Librarian, email j.westcott@poole.gov.uk or telephone 01202 262452.

If you find it difficult to access the communal area, a volunteer can deliver your books straight to your flat or room.  Contact the Royal Voluntary Service Home Library Manager email dorsetwiltshirehub@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or telephone 01305 236666.

Being a Home Library Service Volunteer

If you love reading and have a few hours to spare, we’d love you to join our Home Library Service volunteers and make a real difference to someone’s life. You’ll deliver books to customers in their own home or a care home, have a chat about what they have read, and then take the books they have finished and any requests back to the library.

You’ll visit people every 3 weeks, and you’ll need to allow 2-3 hours, depending on the number of people you visit. You can volunteer for a round on your own or with someone else.

To become a Home Library Service volunteer you will need to join the Royal Voluntary Service, who will ensure you are properly trained and supported.  For the security of our clients you will be subject to a vetting procedure carried out by the Royal Voluntary Service.

For more information please contact the Royal Voluntary Service Home Library Manager, email dorsetwiltshirehub@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or telephone 01305 236666, or ask any member of library staff.
