Active travel to and from school

We have a duty under the education and inspections act 2006 to assess the travel and transport needs of children and young people in the area and to undertake an audit of the routes to and from school.

This information enabled us to develop and promote a strategy on sustainable transport. The main aims of this strategy are to facilitate safer, happier and more active, sustainable journeys to school.

We adopted a school travel strategy in July 2007: Sustainable journeys to and from school. We have a duty to review and update this strategy. It is now due for annual review by the road safety section, passenger transport and a representative from children's services.

We aim to:

  • reduce car use
  • make the routes to and from school safer for all
  • encourage all schools to work with us to promote safer and more active travel

We are able to offer free assistance and encouragement to schools which choose to join us in promoting and supporting more active travel, road safety education and training.

Short term aims

We aim for stable numbers year by year of children who walk or cycle to school, with a reduction in the numbers travelling by car.

A decrease in the number of car trips from within walking and cycling distance of their chosen school.

Our figures are out of date and we will collect more up to date information during the school year 2017/18.

Medium term aims

An increase in the distance children who actually walk to school from a distance of 800 metres (primary) and 1600 metres (secondary).

Generally more children and young people walking and cycling to school.

Long term aims

An increase in the number of pupils living within walking and cycling distance of their chosen school who walk and/or cycle.

There are measure to encourage and support alternative to the car, they include:

  • mapping and assessing the routes used by children and young people and giving this information to families
  • improving facilities for cyclists and pedestrians
  • assisting schools to set up walking buses
  • expanding and supporting independent travel training for students with special needs
  • links to related initiatives, like Public Health Dorset's work on childhood obesity and Active Dorset's programme on active sport participation
  • special long or short term walking promotions or events; walking buses/park and stride/a walking diary
  • road safety education, including cycle and pedestrian training
  • ensuring that any future school improvement programmes take note of this strategy

We also promote public transport for children and their families for journeys to and from school, college or children's centres and between centres throughout the whole school day. We also include recommendations for the behaviour of young travellers.
