Jobseeker's Allowance

You can apply for Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) to help you while you look for work.

How much you get depends on your circumstances.

To get JSA you usually have to:

  • be 18 or over (but below State Pension age)

  • be available for work

  • meet the other rules for eligibility

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

If you’re ill or disabled, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) offers you:

  • financial support if you’re unable to work

  • personalised help so that you can work if you’re able to

You can apply for ESA if you’re employed, self-employed or unemployed.

You might be transferred to ESA if you’ve been claiming other benefits like Income Support or Incapacity Benefit.

Income Support

You may be able to get Income Support if you meet all the specific conditions including:

  • you and your partner have no income or a low income

  • you’re working less than 16 hours a week

  • you haven’t signed on as unemployed

Pension Credit

Pension Credit is an income-related benefit made up of 2 parts - Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit.

Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income if it’s below a minimum income level.

Savings Credit is an extra payment for people who saved some money towards their retirement, eg a pension.

You may not be eligible for savings credit if you reach State Pension age on or after 6 April 2016.

You don't pay tax on Pension Credit.
